Deacon Marcus Rayfield Smith was born on November 1, 1971, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the late Paul Smith Sr. and Doris Chisolm-Smith. On January 16, 2025, he peacefully transitioned from this earthly life to his heavenly home.
From an early age, Marcus dedicated his life to faith, service, and love. As a youth, he was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist Church in North Charleston, South Carolina which is now under the spiritual guidance of Reverend Dr. Bernard Brown, Sr. On October 25, 2020 he was united in holy matrimony to the former Stacey Brown. God led the beautiful couple to worship at the Flora Branch Missionary Baptist Church, North, South Carolina. He became a devoted member and on November 12, 2023, he was ordained as a Deacon, a role he embraced with unwavering dedication. His commitment to his faith extended beyond the pulpit, as he also served as a Sunday school teacher, imparting wisdom and inspiration to others.
Marcus’s love for sports was evident throughout his life, particularly his passion for football and baseball. A proud and loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, he found joy in the camaraderie and excitement of the game. Academically, he was a graduate of Gorson H. Garrett High School and pursued higher education at Benedict College, where he earned a degree in Business Administration. Professionally, he dedicated over 25 years of service to Richland County, culminating in his retirement from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
A man of deep faith, love, and integrity, Deacon Marcus Rayfield Smith leaves behind a legacy that will be forever cherished. He is survived by his loving wife, Stacey Brown Smith; his beloved son, Keshawn James; his devoted mother, Doris Chisolm-Smith; his brothers, Paul D. (Juanita) Smith Jr. and Antwan J. Smith; his sisters-in-law, Angel Brown, Delane Brown, and Edith (Sherrod) Walker Reed; his brother-in-law, Dwayne Brown; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and dear family and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Though he has departed from this life, his love, kindness, and faith will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
