John Swinton Obituary

John Swinton Jr., affectionately known as “Johnny” was born August 2, 1951, to the late John and Maude (Hartwell), Swinton Sr. in New York City. He departed this life unexpectedly on March 9, 2022, in his home in Columbia, South Carolina. Johnny was the youngest of two children. Johnny received his formative education through the Archdiocese of New York Catholic School System, where he served as an Altar Boy and sang in the choir. He also attended Rice High School, which is part of the NYC Public School system. In 1971, Johnny and Vietta Horton, of Bronx, NY were blessed with one son, Juan Horton, who was the apple of Johnny’s eye and best friend.

John was very artistic. He enjoyed drawing, and taught himself to play the keyboard. Some of our fondest memories of Johnny are impromptu musical sessions where he would sing and play the keyboard with other musicians in the family and friends.  John was a great orator and was very persuasive, which he used in his entreprenueral pursuits. His greatest passion was Auto Body and Fender Repair, and his skills in this area were unmatched. He was introduced to Auto Body and Fender Repair from a mentor, but some of his skills were self taught. He moved to South Carolina in pursuit of his passion for auto body repair. Johnny, always the entrepreneur, had several businesses over the years and was the proud owner of P&J Auto Body Shop in Norway, South Carolina, where he allowed his gift to make room for him. He worked in this profession for many years. Although John encountered several challenges over the years, he will be well remembered for his ability to move forward and persevere. In 2021, Johnny recommitted his life to Jesus Christ and enjoyed reading his bible and listening to church services.

John leaves to cherish his memories: His Son, Juan Horton, of Bronx, New York, five granddaughters: Ashliegh Majors, Johnelle Fuller, Dejon Fuller, Milani Horton, Megaa Horton, and one step grand: Kristin Fuller. Great Grands: Raijon Fuller-Francis, Dajohn Fuller-Brown, Gehani Fuller-Brown and step grand: Kryst Fuller-Clayton all of the Bronx, NY. One sister, Karidean (Melvin Antley) Rush Of Springfield, SC, one nephew: Darron (Carmen) Rush Of College Park, GA, one Niece: Debra Rush- (Kirk) Murphy of Jamaica, NY, three Grand nephews: Justin Rush, of College Park, Ga., Brandon Rogers of Chicago, Ill, Darrius Rush Of Queens Village, NY.
