Martha Ann was born May 9, 1954 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina to the late Jessie Stroman, Jr. and the late Martha Ann Hart Stroman. She was preceded in death by one sister, Alberta Stroman and one brother, John K. (Jack) Stroman. She was educated in the public schools of Norway, South Carolina and was a 1972 graduate of Norfield High School. She was married to Bobby L. James on March 16, 1973 and to this union two children were born.
Sister, or Big Sister as the family and close friends affectionately called her was very particular of her self presentations, and would only “come out right, picture perfect from head to toe.” Sister was very work oriented and had very high work ethics. Her on time meant being early. She was employed in the following positions until her failing health succumbed her. Amblers Industries, and Stone Manufacturing Plant as a seamstress. Sister was also a secretary and payroll clerk at Embeford Dairy Farm. She also served the Orangeburg Consolidated School District four as a substitute teacher at Hunter Kinard Tyler Schools. Sister worked as the Medical Records Clerk at the Bamberg Job Corps Center, and as secretary to Dr. Jim Furtick, Jr. She was also an avon representative for fifteen years.
Her strong will was like no other. Sister was a dialysis patient for over twenty five years. During these years miracles were revealed through her. She withstood more than thirty surgeries, including open heart surgery, and defeated cancer like a champ. Her strength, resiliency, perseverance, and most importantly her faith in God marveled medicine right up to the very end. She spoke with authority, said what she meant and meant what she said. Sister’s life was an example for all to follow.
We thank God for allowing us to have Sister as a wife, mother, sister, aunt, advisor, disciplinarian, friend and a dedicated church member. Sister peacefully left us among the living on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 11:35am at The Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, South Carolina.
