Mrs. Mattie Mae James Obituary

 

Mrs. Mattie Mae James entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Pruitt Health in Ridgeway, South Carolina. Mattie (Suge) was born on March 10, 1947 in St. George, South Carolina to the late Dorothy Street and Arthur Gillyard.

“Suge” as she was affectionately known was educated at Williams Memorial High School in Dorchester, South Carolina. She was a member of St. Daniels United Methodist Church.

Suge was a homemaker to her family.  She had many hobbies such as fishing, shopping, vacationing, and gardening.  She also loved spending time with her family and friends and listening to music.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton James, Jr., parents, Dorothy Street and Arthur Gillyard, Brother, Allen Shuler, sister in law, Lillie M. Lawyer and her brother in law, Willie James.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Teresa (Roger) Bowman of Orangeburg, South Carolina; stepson, Jasper Myers of York, Pennsylvania; eight siblings, Ozella Neals, Edna Barnwell, and Edith Govan all of St. George, South Carolina, Louise Carn of Summerville, South Carolina, Betty Ann (Ken) Jackson, and Stroman Lee Shuler both of Columbia, South Carolina, Rudolph Shuler of Santee, South Carolina and Harry Oland of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Joshua Jones of Camden, South Carolina, Rashanda Jones of Columbia, South Carolina, Monique Bowman of Orangeburg, South Carolina and Rogetta Bowman of Santee, South Carolina; five great grandchildren, Janasha Jones, skylar Jones, Elijah Carter, Noel Bowman, and Brielle Carter; four sisters in law, Margaret Carn and Helen Carter both of Dorchester, South Carolina, Dorothy Carn of Summerville, South Carolina, and Debbie Ravenell of North Charleston, South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
